St. Louis Browns

St. Louis · 1902–1953

The Browns played 52 seasons and won one pennant, in 1944, when wartime service had emptied most rosters and both St. Louis clubs reached the World Series — the Cardinals won it. The record is 3,414-4,465, and the club finished in the bottom half of the league in the great majority of its years.

The best season is 1922, at 93-61, and it did not win the pennant. In 1939 it lost 111 games. Bill Veeck bought the club in 1951 and, unable to make it win, made it interesting: he sent Eddie Gaedel, who was three feet seven inches tall, to bat in August of that year, and the league banned the contract the next day. He also signed Satchel Paige, who was in his forties and pitched three seasons here.

Fourteen Hall of Famers played here, among them George Sisler, who batted .420 in 1922, Rogers Hornsby, Goose Goslin, Heinie Manush, Bobby Wallace and Paige. The club shared Sportsman's Park with the Cardinals for thirty years as the landlord, then sold the park to them, and moved to Baltimore in 1954.
