Bob Muncrief went 13-8 for the 1944 Browns, the only pennant-winning team that franchise ever had, and started a game in the all-St. Louis World Series that autumn against the Cardinals.
He had first appeared for the Browns in 1937 and returned in 1941 for seven straight seasons, making an All-Star team in 1944 and throwing 67 complete games across his career. He is also remembered for a moment of sportsmanship: he declined an easy chance to end Joe DiMaggio's 1941 hitting streak by walking him, and gave up a hit instead.
Born in Madill, Oklahoma in 1916, Muncrief won a championship with Cleveland in 1948 and finished 80-82 across twelve seasons. Muncrief lived to eighty, dying on February 6, 1996.
