This is a reference site. There is nothing to buy, no account to make here, and no reason for it to know who you are.
No accounts
This site issues no login and keeps no mailing list. Nothing you read here is tied to an identity, because it holds no identity to tie it to.
Two things do reach outside this server: the analytics that count what gets read, and the advertising that pays for the hosting. Both are described below.
Analytics
Google Analytics counts what gets read, so the archive can be pointed at the pages people actually want.
It sets two cookies from this domain — _ga and one
beginning _ga_ — holding a random number that stands in for your browser. That
number is what keeps a second visit next week from being counted as a second
person. It is not a name, and it is not matched to one.
What gets recorded is the page you are on, the page or search that sent you, your browser and screen size, and an approximate location — country, region, usually city — that Google works out from your IP address. Google does not store the IP address itself for Analytics. This site's Analytics data is not connected to Google's advertising products, and it is not sold or shared for marketing.
If you would rather not be counted, Google publishes an opt-out extension, and any content blocker will stop the script. Every page works the same either way.
Advertising
The ads are sold and served by Grow, which belongs to Mediavine, and they are what pays for the hosting. This site hands them nothing about you. What Grow and the ad partners it works with collect, they collect in your browser: an identifier that stands in for the browser itself, which page the ad ran on, an approximate location, and whether the ad was seen or clicked. That is used to decide which ad to show and to count that it was shown.
Grow also runs an account that works across every site using it. Nothing here asks you for one and nothing here needs one. Signing in, or handing an address to one of its forms, is the point at which Grow asks whether what it holds may be used for personalized ads — in the EU, the UK and several other countries as a box you tick yourself, elsewhere as a notice — and its own privacy notice sits there beside the question. That is the place the answer is given and changed; this site is not told what you chose.
Mediavine publishes its privacy policy and the list of partners that can receive any of it. A content blocker stops the script outright. Every page reads the same either way.
What the server sees
Like any web server, it receives the request itself: the page asked for, the time, your browser's user-agent string, and your IP address. That is what makes serving a page possible. It is used to keep the site running and to find pages that are broken, and it is not sold, shared for advertising, or used to build a profile.
The search box
A search runs against this site's own database. The suggestions that appear as you type are fetched from this site's server and go nowhere else.
If you press enter and land on a results page, Analytics also counts what you searched for, tied to the same random number as the rest of the visit and to no name. That is how the archive finds out what people came looking for and did not find.
Links and images off this site
Photographs are hosted by Wikimedia Commons, so loading a page with a photograph on it means your browser makes a request to Wikimedia and they see it under their own privacy policy. Links to Retrosheet, Wikipedia and the other sources are ordinary outbound links.
If you write to [email protected], that message is kept for as long as it takes to check the correction and fix the page. It is not added to a mailing list.
People on this site
The archive is about people, most of them long dead, and it publishes only what is already in the public record of a professional sport: names, dates, birthplaces, clubs and performance. If you are a living person written about here and something is wrong, write to the address above and it will be corrected.
