Born July 10, 1864
Youngstown, OH, USA
Jimmy McAleer was Cleveland's center fielder for most of the 1890s and was regarded as the best defensive outfielder of the decade, at a time when that judgement rested on what people saw rather than on anything measured.
His larger part came afterwards. He helped Ban Johnson recruit players away from the National League as the American League was formed, managed Cleveland's first American League club in 1901, then St. Louis for eight years and Washington for two, and later bought a half share of the Boston Red Sox and owned them through the 1912 championship.
Born in Youngstown, Ohio in 1864, McAleer batted .253 with 1,008 hits and 262 stolen bases. McAleer was sixty-six when he died, in April 1931.
