He went 30-7 in 1934, was voted the National League's most valuable player, and St. Louis won the World Series. His younger brother Paul won 19 games for the same club and threw a no-hitter in September. From 1932 through 1935 Dizzy Dean led the league in strikeouts every year, and he led in wins in 1934 and 1935.
A line drive off Earl Averill's bat broke his toe in the 1937 All-Star Game. He came back before it healed, changed his motion to protect it, and hurt his arm doing so. He was 13-10 that season, at twenty-seven, and won sixteen more games in the rest of his life.
Twelve seasons produced 150 wins, 83 losses, a 3.02 earned run average and 154 complete games in 230 starts, a small record for a Hall of Famer. He was elected anyway, in 1953. By then he was a broadcaster, and on September 28, 1947, seventeen years to the day after his debut, he started one game for the Browns and pitched four scoreless innings.
