Earl Caldwell Marquee

Caldwell's best season arrived at forty-one. Working entirely from the White Sox bullpen in 1946, he went 13-4 with eight saves and a 2.08 earned run average across 39 appearances and 90 innings. He finished fourteenth in American League Most Valuable Player voting.

Eight seasons gave him a 33-43 record, 25 saves, 202 strikeouts and a 4.69 earned run average in 587 innings. He started 49 of his 200 appearances, completed 18 games and threw five shutouts. His roles ranged from a 25-start season in 1936 to full-time relief a decade later.

Caldwell debuted with Philadelphia in 1928, did not return until 1935 with the Browns, then spent seven more years outside the majors after 1937. He came back with Chicago in 1945 and remained through 1948, when the club sent him to Boston for eight final appearances. He died in 1981, at seventy-six.
