He went 21-7 with 19 complete games in 1958 and won the Cy Young Award when it was given to one pitcher in all of baseball. In the World Series he won the fifth game, saved the sixth and won the seventh in relief, and was its most valuable player.
He led the American League in strikeouts in 1954 with 185 and in walks in the same season with 181, which is a combination that describes the whole career: twelve seasons, 101 wins, 1,265 strikeouts and 1,068 walks, with a 3.64 earned run average.
He came from the last St. Louis Browns club and went to the Yankees in a seventeen-player trade in 1954, the largest the game has had. He was called Bullet Bob and could read pitchers' deliveries from the dugout better than anyone, which his teammates traded on. He died in 2013, at eighty-two.
