He went 20-12 with a 3.45 earned run average in 1930 for a Browns club that finished sixth. Nobody else on that staff won more than nine. He won 14 the next year and 15 the year after, both times for clubs that lost more than 90.
Washington traded for him and he went 15-6 in 1933 for the pennant winner, then started the third game of that World Series against the Giants and lost it. Ten seasons gave him 101 wins against 98, a 4.19 earned run average, 1,722 innings and 107 complete games.
He threw a screwball and a slow curve and had almost no fastball, which is how a left-hander survived Sportsman's Park. He was out of the majors at thirty-four. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1974, three days after his seventy-fourth birthday.
