John Anderson Marquee

He came from Sarpsborg, Norway, as a child and is the only Norwegian-born player to have had a long major-league career. He had 190 hits with 99 runs batted in for the 1901 Milwaukee club, led the American League with 39 stolen bases in 1906, and led the National League with 22 triples in 1898.

He also, in a game with the bases loaded, stole second base — which is why for thirty years afterward a foolish play was called a John Anderson. He was known otherwise as Honest John, and the two nicknames coexisted.

Fourteen seasons gave him 1,843 hits, 328 doubles, 124 triples, 978 runs batted in, 338 stolen bases and a .290 average for nine clubs. He played first base and the outfield about equally. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1949, at seventy-five.
