New York Highlanders
The Highlanders played ten seasons at 734-759 and never won a pennant. The closest was 1904: the club needed one win from a season-ending doubleheader and Jack Chesbro, who had won 41 games that year — the most anyone has won in a season since 1900 — threw a wild pitch that let in the deciding run.
That 1904 club finished 92-59. The worst is 1912, at 50-102, the last under the name. The club had been the Baltimore Orioles of 1901 and 1902 and was moved to New York to give the American League a presence there. Home was Hilltop Park, on high ground in Washington Heights, which is where the name came from.
Four Hall of Famers played here: Willie Keeler, Chesbro, Clark Griffith, who managed the first six seasons and won 419 games, and Branch Rickey, who caught briefly and is in the Hall as an executive for signing Jackie Robinson. The club moved to the Polo Grounds in 1913 and took the Yankees name.
