Jack Doyle Marquee

On June 7, 1892, playing for Cleveland, he was sent up to bat for another player and singled — the first pinch hit anyone recorded. He was called Dirty Jack for the way he played and the number of umpires, opponents and spectators he fought.

Seventeen seasons gave him 1,811 hits, 316 doubles, 971 runs batted in, 518 stolen bases and a .299 average for ten clubs. He drove in 103 runs for the 1894 Giants and 101 in 1896, the year Baltimore won the pennant with him at first base.

He was born in Ireland, one of very few Irish-born major leaguers. He scouted for the Cubs for thirty years afterward and signed players into the 1950s. Two committees have taken up his name. He died on the last day of 1958, at eighty-nine.
