Carl Erskine's No-Hitter
Carl Erskine threw a no-hitter for the Brooklyn Dodgers against the New York Giants on May 12, 1956, winning 3–0.
John McGraw managed the Giants from 1902 to 1932 and won 2,583 games doing it, second only to Connie Mack's 3,582 with the Athletics. Under him and after him the club took 17 pennants and seven World Series across 74 seasons in New York, on a record of 6,033-4,855. The last title came in 1954 and the club left for San Francisco three years later.
The best season on file is 1885, at 85-27, before McGraw and before the pennants; the worst is 1902, at 48-88, which was the year he arrived. Home throughout was the Polo Grounds, in four successive buildings on two sites.
Forty-six Hall of Famers played here, among them Christy Mathewson, Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell, Bill Terry, Travis Jackson and George Davis. Bill Terry managed the club after McGraw and Leo Durocher managed the 1954 champions, the club's last in New York.
