Bobby Thomson Marquee

On October 3, 1951, in the ninth inning of the third game of a playoff, with the Giants a run down and two men on, he hit Ralph Branca's second pitch into the left-field seats at the Polo Grounds. New York had been thirteen and a half games behind Brooklyn in August. It is the most famous home run the game has, and the radio call of it is the most famous sentence.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,705 hits, 264 home runs, 1,026 runs batted in and a .270 average, with three All-Star selections. He hit 32 home runs and drove in 101 in 1951 and had four seasons of 100 or more runs batted in.

The Giants traded him to Milwaukee after 1953. He broke his ankle sliding in spring training in March 1954 and the club gave left field to a twenty-year-old named Hank Aaron, who kept it for twenty-three years. Fifteen writers' ballots gave Thomson no more than thirteen votes in any of them. He died in 2010, at eighty-six.
