Arlie Latham was called the Freshest Man on Earth, which in the 1880s meant something between a compliment and a warning. He coached from the baselines with a running commentary aimed at opposing pitchers, turned cartwheels on the field, and was among the most disliked and most watched players of his time.
He was also very good: 1,481 runs and 742 stolen bases across seventeen seasons, mostly at third base for the St. Louis Browns clubs that won four consecutive American Association pennants in the 1880s.
Born in West Lebanon, New Hampshire in 1860, he appeared in four games for the New York Giants in 1909 at forty-nine, having become the first full-time base coach in the sport. He lived to ninety-two, dying in November 1952.
