This Washington club played eight National League seasons at 410-697 and finished in the bottom half of a twelve-club league every year. The best season is 1897, at 61-71 — the club never had a winning one. In 1893 it won 40 and lost 89.

It was one of the four clubs the league removed when it cut from twelve to eight after the 1899 season, along with Baltimore, Cleveland and Louisville. Washington had no major-league club for two years, until the American League placed one there in 1901.

Two Hall of Famers played here: Roger Bresnahan, who debuted at 18 and later caught for John McGraw's Giants, and Jim O'Rourke at the end of a long career. It played at Boundary Field. This is a different club from the Senators of 1901 to 1960, whom the archive holds separately.
