Born September 29, 1866
Louisville, KY, USA
He won 264 games and lost 232 across fourteen seasons, with 449 complete games and 4,337 innings, and hit more batters with pitches than any pitcher in the game's history. He worked in the era when a pitcher started sixty games a year and finished nearly all of them: he completed 449 of his 505 starts.
The 1880s and 1890s produced these workloads and then destroyed the men who carried them. He made 55 starts in 1887, his first season, at twenty, completed 53 of them and won 26. By thirty-five he was finished.
He pitched for eleven clubs across five different major leagues — the American Association, the Players' League, the National League, and briefly the new American League in 1901 — which is a record of how unstable professional baseball was before the two-league settlement. Two Veterans Committees looked at him in the 1950s.
