Cy Young's Perfect Game
Young retires all twenty-seven Philadelphia batters at the Huntington Avenue Grounds, the first perfect game of the modern era.
The Athletics won the National Association's first pennant in 1871, which makes them the first champions of professional baseball as an organized sport. Five seasons at 165-86, a rate of .657, without another pennant: Boston won the remaining four.
Dick McBride pitched and managed for all five seasons, going 161-85. The club joined the National League at its founding in 1876 and was expelled after one season for refusing to make its final western road trip, the gate receipts not being worth the fare.
One Hall of Famer played here, Cap Anson, who was 19 and at the start of a career that ran to 1897. The National Association is not counted as a major league by Major League Baseball, so none of this appears in the career totals on this site. Home was the Jefferson Street Grounds.
