He pitched for Baltimore and Brooklyn in the American Association in the 1880s, spent 1891 to 1894 outside the major leagues, and came back with Louisville at twenty-nine. In 1898 he went 28-15 with 41 complete games, which was the best season anyone had for that club.
Twelve seasons gave him 142 wins against 167 with 287 complete games in 311 starts and 2,734 innings. The earned run average, 4.22, is a fact about the 1890s, when the mound moved back and the scoring doubled.
He also played the outfield and shortstop and batted .216 with 254 hits. He finished with the Chicago club in 1901 at thirty-five. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1952, at eighty-six.
