Twenty-one seasons gave him 2,651 hits, 411 doubles, 1,378 runs batted in, 303 stolen bases and a .292 average. He caught 324 games early, played 1,724 at third base afterward, and drove in 132 runs for the 1894 Phillies.
He played for the Athletics in three different leagues — the American Association, the Players' League and the American League — and was Connie Mack's third baseman for the 1902 and 1905 pennant winners, hitting .342 in 1902 at thirty-six.
No nineteenth-century player outside the Hall of Fame has more hits. Two writers' ballots gave him one vote each and eleven committees have taken up his name. He died in 1927, at sixty-one.
