Force played five seasons in the National Association before the National League began. Those separate records contain 436 hits, 330 runs, 167 runs batted in and a .335 average in 261 games for Washington, Baltimore, Troy, Chicago and Philadelphia.
His ten recognized major-league seasons gave him 623 hits, 80 doubles, 209 runs batted in, 323 runs and a .211 average across 768 games. He played primarily at shortstop, with substantial stretches at second and third base. Force also made four pitching appearances.
Force represented both the New York Mutuals and Philadelphia Athletics in the National League's first season, 1876, then played for St. Louis. Buffalo employed him for seven seasons from 1879 through 1885, his longest stay with one club. He finished with Washington in 1886 and died in 1918, at sixty-eight.
