Baltimore Canaries
The Canaries played three National Association seasons at 78-79, finishing second in 1872 behind Boston. The name came from the uniforms, which were yellow — clubs of the period were routinely named by the press for what they wore, and several in this archive are.
The club folded after 1874 when its backers withdrew, two years before the National League formed. Baltimore then had no major-league club until the American Association placed one there in 1882.
One Hall of Famer played here, Candy Cummings, who is credited with inventing the curveball and pitched for the club in 1873. Home was Newington Park. The National Association is not counted as a major league by Major League Baseball, so these seasons sit outside the career totals on this site.
