Ezra Sutton Marquee

He played third base in the first game the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players ever staged, in 1871, one of the sport's first paid professionals, and was still playing regularly thirteen years later when he led the National League with 162 hits in 1884, at thirty-four.

Thirteen major-league seasons — on top of the two in the earlier Association before the National League existed — gave him 1,231 hits, 190 doubles, 73 triples, 741 runs batted in and a .288 average, with 880 games at third base for Boston's National League club, where he played twelve straight seasons.

He was regarded as the finest fielding third baseman of his era before Bill Bradley matched the reputation a generation later. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1907, at fifty-seven.
