Cy Young's Perfect Game

Cy Young was thirty-seven and in his fifteenth season when he faced the Philadelphia Athletics at the Huntington Avenue Grounds. Twenty-seven Philadelphia batters came to the plate and twenty-seven went back to the bench. Boston won 3–0.

It was the first perfect game thrown under the modern pitching distance, and the third in major-league history after Lee Richmond and John Montgomery Ward managed it in the same month of 1880, from forty-five feet rather than sixty feet six inches. Rube Waddell, who had beaten Boston earlier in the week and was said to have taunted Young about it, made the last out.

Young pitched until he was forty-four and finished with 511 wins, which no one has approached since. This archive holds a second no-hitter from him, against New York on June 30, 1908, four years after the perfect game and in his nineteenth season.
