Bill Hallman Marquee

b. March 31, 1867 · Philadelphia Quakers 1888–1889, Philadelphia Athletics 1890–1891, Philadelphia Phillies 1892–1897, 1901–1903, St. Louis Browns 1897, Brooklyn Bridegrooms 1898, Cleveland Blues 1901

He hit 171 hits and drove in 84 runs in 1892 and 169 hits and 91 runs batted in in 1895, playing second base for Philadelphia clubs built around Ed Delahanty, Sam Thompson and Billy Hamilton in the outfield. He never led the league in anything, which is why almost nobody remembers him, but he was a fixture on good clubs for a decade.

Fourteen seasons gave him 1,641 hits, 236 doubles, 82 triples, 942 runs batted in, 200 stolen bases and a .272 average, with 1,139 games at second base. He also played shortstop and third base in stretches.

He finished with brief stops in Cleveland and Brooklyn and was out of the majors at thirty-six. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1920, at fifty-three.
