Philadelphia Quakers
The Quakers are the Phillies under the name they carried for seven seasons from 1883. The first was a disaster — 17-81, the worst record in the league by a distance — after which Harry Wright was brought in and managed the next six at 373-343.
Seven seasons at 390-424, with a best of 1886 at 71-43 and no pennant. Home was Recreation Park and then the Philadelphia Baseball Grounds, later called the Baker Bowl.
Three Hall of Famers played here: Ed Delahanty, who arrived at 21 and became one of the great hitters of the century, Sam Thompson and Tommy McCarthy. The club has been the Phillies since 1890 and has used the name longer than any club in American professional sport has used one.
