Ed Delahanty Marquee Hall of Fame 1945

b. October 30, 1867 · Philadelphia Quakers 1888–1889, Cleveland Infants 1890, Philadelphia Phillies 1891–1901, Washington Senators 1902–1903

He batted over .400 in three separate seasons, in 1894, 1895 and 1899, and his 238 hits in 1899 led the National League. He led the league in doubles five times, and at least once each in home runs, runs batted in, triples and stolen bases. Philadelphia never won a pennant in his eleven years there.

On July 2, 1903, a conductor put him off a train at Fort Erie, Ontario, for drinking and causing a disturbance. He walked onto the International Bridge over the Niagara River, went into the water and over the falls. He was thirty-five. His last game had been a week earlier, on June 25.

He finished with 2,597 hits, 1,466 runs batted in and 456 stolen bases in sixteen seasons, at a career average of .346, which no right-handed hitter in this archive except Rogers Hornsby has beaten. He was the oldest of five brothers who all reached the majors. The Hall of Fame elected him in 1945, forty-two years after his death.
