Born October 9, 1865
Philadelphia, PA, USA
He had been a pitcher, an outfielder and a first baseman across four leagues, and he had lost 21 games for Washington in 1893 and 15 more in 1894 with an arm that hurt. Then Baltimore signed him and he went 20-7 with a 2.10 earned run average in 1898 for a club that won 96 games.
Fifteen seasons gave him 84 wins against 80, a 4.45 earned run average, 1,440 innings and 144 complete games, plus 332 hits as a batter with a .241 average across 411 games — 188 of them as a pitcher and 185 in the outfield.
He played in the Union Association in 1884 as an eighteen-year-old, in the Players' League in 1890, and in the National League on either side of both. He umpired afterward and lived to ninety-two, dying in 1958. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
