Pittsburg Alleghenys

In 1890 the Alleghenys went 23-113, the second-worst winning rate any club has posted, behind only the 1899 Cleveland Spiders. The cause was the same kind of thing: the Players' League formed that year and nearly the whole roster left for it, and what was left lost four games in five.

The club spelled its city without the h, which was the official federal spelling at the time and was changed back in 1911. Nine seasons at 441-617, best in 1886 at 80-57. Home was Recreation Park and then Exposition Park.

Five Hall of Famers played here: Pud Galvin, Jake Beckley, Ned Hanlon, who managed briefly before building the Baltimore clubs of the 1890s, Hank O'Day, who became a famous umpire, and Deacon White. The club took the Pirates name in 1891, after signing a player another team claimed and being called piratical for it.
