Ned Hanlon Marquee Hall of Fame 1996

He played center field, 1,133 games of it, and scored 931 runs in 13 seasons on 1,318 hits, a .259 average and 472 walks. Stolen bases were not credited to him until 1886, so the 329 in his record all come from the second half of his career.

Detroit kept him from 1881 through 1888, and the Wolverines won the National League pennant and the World Series in 1887. He was among the players who walked out in 1890 for the Players' League, where he played for and managed the Pittsburgh Burghers; it folded after one season. He returned to Pittsburgh, then played 11 games for Baltimore in 1892 and was finished at 35.

What he is remembered for is Baltimore after that. He built and drilled the Orioles clubs that Hughie Jennings, Wilbert Robinson, John McGraw and Willie Keeler played on, and their aggressive style is credited to him. None of that is in this archive. The Veterans Committee passed him over eleven times before taking him in 1996, fifty-nine years after his death.
