Born December 25, 1856
St. Louis, MO, USA
In 1883 he won 46 games for a Buffalo club that won 52 all year. He won 46 again in 1884, out of the team's 64, with twelve shutouts, a 1.99 earned run average, and 71 complete games in 72 starts. He stood 5-foot-8 and weighed 190 pounds.
He passed 300 wins during the 1888 season, the first man to get there. He finished with 5,941 innings and 639 complete games, second to Cy Young in both, and with 308 losses, also second to Young. He jumped to the Players' League in 1890 with the Pittsburgh Burghers and was back in the National League the following year.
His win total is reported two ways. Counting the major leagues alone he won 361; adding the 1875 season he spent with the St. Louis Brown Stockings of the National Association makes 365, the figure usually printed. He died in 1902 at 45, and the Veterans Committee elected him sixty-three years after that, in 1965.
