Field's largest season came with Columbus in 1884. He played 105 games, collected 97 hits, scored 74 runs and hit four home runs. The games, hits and runs were career highs, and the home-run total was matched only once.

Five seasons gave him 292 hits, 38 doubles, 21 triples, 10 home runs, 50 runs batted in and a .230 average across 331 games. Field played 330 games at first base. He also made two pitching appearances, including a complete-game win and one save for Rochester in 1890.

Field debuted with Columbus in 1883 and remained there for two seasons. He split 1885 between Baltimore and Pittsburgh, collecting 80 hits and driving in 25 across 94 games. His next major-league appearances came with Rochester in 1890, followed by five final games for Washington in 1898. The gaps stretched his career across sixteen calendar years. He died in 1953, at ninety.
