Billy Hoy Marquee

b. May 23, 1862 · Washington Nationals 1888–1889, Buffalo Bisons 1890, St. Louis Browns 1891, Washington Senators 1892–1893, Cincinnati Reds 1894–1897, 1902, Louisville Colonels 1898–1899, Chicago White Sox 1901

Meningitis took his hearing at three. He learned to read lips and to sign, went to the Ohio School for the Deaf, and came to the major leagues at twenty-six. He stole 82 bases as a rookie in 1888, the most in the league, and drew the most walks in 1891 and again in 1901, thirteen years apart.

Fourteen seasons gave him 2,048 hits, 1,429 runs, 1,006 walks, 596 stolen bases and a .288 average, with 1,796 games in the outfield. On June 19, 1889, he threw out three runners at the plate in one game, which almost nobody has done.

He asked coaches to signal balls and strikes so he could follow the count, and umpires' hand signs are often traced to him, though the case is not proven. He lived to ninety-nine, threw out a ceremonial first pitch at the 1961 World Series in Cincinnati two months before he died, and has been considered by seven committees.
