Jack Glasscock Marquee

b. July 22, 1857 · Cleveland Blues 1879–1884, Cincinnati Outlaw Reds 1884, St. Louis Maroons 1885–1886, Indianapolis Hoosiers 1887–1889, New York Giants 1890–1891, St. Louis Browns 1892–1893, Pittsburgh Pirates 1893–1894, Louisville Colonels 1895, Washington Senators 1895

He had 205 hits and hit .352 in 1889 and 172 hits at .336 in 1890, the most in the league both years. Seventeen seasons gave him 2,041 hits, 313 doubles, 1,164 runs, 372 stolen bases and a .290 average, with 1,629 games at shortstop.

They called him Pebbly Jack because he cleared stones out of the infield dirt before every inning, which tells you what the fields were like and what he thought of them. He played the position bare-handed for most of his career and was considered the first shortstop to range far to his left, cutting off balls the second baseman was supposed to have.

He jumped to the Union Association in 1884 and back the next year, which cost him standing with the writers who later voted. He was a carpenter in Wheeling, West Virginia, before and after. Eleven ballots and committees have taken up his name without electing him. He died in 1947, at eighty-nine.
