Born March 16, 1865
Cobh, County Cork, Ireland
He came over from Ireland as an infant and became one of the very few men born there to have a long major-league career: 2,256 hits, 208 doubles, 518 stolen bases and a .301 average across seventeen seasons, with 1,816 games in right field. He led the National League with 45 stolen bases in 1900.
He hit .300 or better in nine seasons and was a manager for most of the last twelve, running Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Washington, Brooklyn and Boston. None of those clubs finished higher than fourth under him.
Scouting for Boston afterward, he saw a nineteen-year-old pitcher at St. Mary's Industrial School in Baltimore and told the Red Sox to buy him. Six committees have taken up his name. He died on Christmas Day 1953, at eighty-eight.
