Harry Davis Marquee

b. July 18, 1873 · New York Giants 1895–1896, Pittsburgh Pirates 1896–1898, Louisville Colonels 1898, Washington Senators 1898–1899, Philadelphia Athletics 1901–1911, 1913–1917, Cleveland Naps 1912

He hit 10 home runs in 1904, 8 in 1905, 12 in 1906 and 8 in 1907, the most in the league every time. The numbers look absurd now and they were the standard then: he was the power hitter of the dead-ball American League, and he led it in doubles three times and in runs batted in twice as well.

Twenty-two seasons gave him 1,841 hits, 361 doubles, 145 triples, 1,001 runs batted in, 285 stolen bases and a .277 average. He captained Connie Mack's Athletics, played first base beside the infield Mack would not sell, and was on the clubs that won the World Series in 1910 and 1911.

He managed Cleveland for most of 1912, went back to Philadelphia as a coach, and served on the Philadelphia city council. Two ballots in the 1940s gave him one vote and then two. He died in 1947, at seventy-four.
