Dick Bartell Marquee

b. November 22, 1907 · Pittsburgh Pirates 1927–1930, Philadelphia Phillies 1931–1934, New York Giants 1935–1938, 1941–1943, 1946, Chicago Cubs 1939, Detroit Tigers 1940–1941

He hit 48 doubles in 1932 and 46 in 1931 and finished with 442, along with 2,165 hits, 748 walks and a .284 average across eighteen seasons. He played 1,679 games at shortstop and was chosen for the first two All-Star teams.

He was small, loud and permanently aggrieved: he fought infielders, umpires and his own managers, spiked people going into second base and was spiked in return. The Giants got him in 1935 and he was the shortstop for their 1936 and 1937 pennants; Detroit got him in 1940 and he was the shortstop for that pennant too.

He wrote a memoir of the 1930s that historians still use. Four writers' ballots gave him one vote each and seven committees have looked at him. He died in 1995, at eighty-seven.
