Augie Galan Marquee

In 1935 he played every game for the Cubs, led the National League with 133 runs and 22 stolen bases, had 203 hits — and did not hit into a single double play all season, which no player has matched over a full year.

Sixteen seasons gave him 1,706 hits, 336 doubles, 979 walks, 123 stolen bases and a .287 average, with three All-Star selections. He led the league in walks in 1943 and 1944 for Brooklyn, drawing more than a hundred each year.

He broke his kneecap in 1940 and the Cubs let him go; Brooklyn got five good seasons out of him afterward. He was the first player to hit home runs from both sides of the plate in the same game, in 1937. Two writers' ballots gave him two votes and then three. He died in 1993, at eighty-one.
