Clarence Mitchell Marquee

b. February 22, 1891 · Detroit Tigers 1911, Cincinnati Reds 1916–1917, Brooklyn Robins 1918–1922, Philadelphia Phillies 1923–1928, St. Louis Cardinals 1928–1930, New York Giants 1930–1932

In the fifth inning of the fifth game of the 1920 World Series he lined into Bill Wambsganss's glove with two men running, and Wambsganss stepped on second and tagged the runner from first — the only unassisted triple play in World Series history. His next time up he hit into a double play, which means he made five outs in two at bats.

He was one of the seventeen pitchers permitted to keep throwing the spitball after it was banned in 1920, and threw it until 1932. Eighteen seasons gave him 125 wins against 139, a 4.12 earned run average and 2,217 innings.

He also hit .252 with 324 hits and was used at first base and in the outfield. His brother Willie pitched briefly as well. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1963, at seventy-two.
