Carl Hubbell

Carl Hubbell Marquee Hall of Fame 1947

b. June 22, 1903 · New York Giants 1928–1943

At the 1934 All-Star Game he started for the National League and struck out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin in order. That is the sequence everyone remembers, and it came in an exhibition game. The rest of his work kept the Giants in business for sixteen seasons.

He led the National League in wins in 1933, 1936, and 1937, in shutouts in 1933 with 10, in strikeouts in 1937, and in saves in 1934, because the Giants used him in relief between starts. He was the league's Most Valuable Player in 1933 and again in 1936, when he went 26-6.

The screwball made him, and it required turning his forearm outward on every pitch. By the time he stopped, his left arm would not straighten and the palm faced out. He threw a no-hitter against Pittsburgh on May 8, 1929, an 11-0 win, finished 253-154 with 260 complete games and a 2.98 earned run average, and entered the Hall of Fame in 1947.
