Born September 18, 1898
Cleveland, OH, USA
He got 393 hits and batted .289 across seventeen seasons, including 52 hits in 1923 alone, which for a pitcher is an absurd figure and is why managers used him to pinch-hit. He won 200 games and lost 166, with 232 complete games and 3,119 innings.
He won 26 games in 1923 and 27 in 1926, leading the American League both times, for Cleveland clubs that finished third and second. He is the pitcher most often named as the inventor of the slider, which he threw in the early 1920s and called a nickel curve.
He was signed off the Cleveland sandlots in 1919 without a day in the minor leagues, and Detroit got him at thirty. His earned run average, 3.99, is a fact about the decade he pitched in. Three writers' ballots gave him no more than four votes. He died in 1985, at eighty-six.
