Fred Pfeffer Marquee

He hit 25 home runs in 1884 for Cap Anson's White Stockings, which was a Chicago number — the fences at Lake Front Park were closer than any in the league — and drove in 101. Sixteen seasons gave him 1,680 hits, 1,021 runs batted in, 383 stolen bases and a .256 average, with 1,538 games at second base.

The hitting was not the point. He was considered the finest fielder at the position in the game, the man who invented or perfected the tag-and-throw double play pivot, and in 1889 he published Scientific Ball, a manual on how the position should be played.

He jumped to the Players' League in 1890 to manage and play for the Chicago club, which cost him standing with the owners for years. He ran a saloon in Chicago afterward. Two committees have looked at him. He died in 1932, at seventy-two.
