Hartley's largest season came with the St. Louis Terriers in 1915. He played 120 games, collected 108 hits, scored 47 runs and drove in 50 while batting .274. The games, hits, runs and runs batted in were career highs.

Fourteen recognized seasons gave him 353 hits, 60 doubles, three home runs, 144 runs batted in and a .268 average across 569 games. Hartley caught 435 games but also appeared at first, second and third base. His two Federal League seasons produced 169 of his career hits.

Hartley debuted with the Giants in 1911 before joining the Terriers in 1914. He later played for the Browns, Red Sox and Indians, with several gaps between major-league appearances. A return to the Browns for five games in 1934 completed a career spread across twenty-four calendar years. He died in 1964, at seventy-six.
