Freddie Fitzsimmons

Freddie Fitzsimmons Marquee

b. July 28, 1901 · New York Giants 1925–1937, Brooklyn Dodgers 1937–1943

In 1940, at thirty-eight, he won 16 games and lost 2, a percentage of .889 that led the National League. Nineteen seasons gave him 217 wins against 146 — a .598 percentage — with a 3.51 earned run average, 3,223 innings and 186 complete games.

He turned his back fully to the hitter in his windup, which is a thing pitchers were told not to do, and threw a knuckle curve. He was heavy and slow and fielded his position better than almost anyone, and he pitched in four World Series, three for the Giants and one for Brooklyn.

The Giants sold him to the Dodgers in 1937, in the middle of the rivalry, and he pitched seven more years there and then managed the Phillies for two. Seven writers' ballots got him to 16 votes of 266 at the peak and eight committees have looked at him since. He died in 1979, at seventy-eight.
