He beat the Yankees 1-0 in the eighth and deciding game of the 1921 World Series and won the last game of the 1922 one as well, both for New York, which won four straight pennants with him in the rotation. He started nine World Series games in all, more than any left-hander of his time.
Fifteen seasons gave him 184 wins against 120 — a .605 percentage — with a 3.20 earned run average, 2,707 innings, 182 complete games and 28 shutouts. He won 21 games in 1920 and 20 in 1921.
He was small, five foot nine, and had a degree in engineering from Rose Polytechnic, and pitched a twenty-one-inning complete game for Boston in 1917 and lost it 2-0 in the last inning. Eleven writers' ballots gave him no more than thirteen votes. He died in 1960, at sixty-eight.
