Cleveland had him first, in 1890, and the New York Giants had him for nine seasons after that. He played 1,372 games at shortstop, 529 at third base and 303 in the outfield, and drove in 135 runs to lead the National League in 1897. He batted better than .350 three times in the 1890s.
He jumped to the White Sox and the new American League in 1902, then tried to return to the Giants in 1903. The two leagues had just made peace, and his case became a test of whether that peace held. He played four games for New York that season, sat out the rest under an injunction, and was back in Chicago in 1904.
Chicago's 1906 club hit so little that it was called the Hitless Wonders, and it won the World Series over the Cubs. Davis played shortstop for it at thirty-five. He died in a Philadelphia state hospital in 1940, and the Veterans Committee elected him in 1998, fifty-eight years later and eighty-nine years after his last game.
