Bill McKechnie Marquee Hall of Fame 1962

He played 846 games between 1907 and 1920, 553 of them at third base, with 713 hits, 127 stolen bases and a .251 average. The eight home runs are the whole of his power. Two of those seasons were spent in the Federal League, with Indianapolis and then Newark, when it was trying to become a third major league and paying men to leave.

He managed twenty-five seasons for 1,896 wins against 1,723 losses, starting with Newark of the Federal League in 1915 while he was still playing, then Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Boston and Cincinnati. He finished first with three different National League clubs — Pittsburgh in 1925, St. Louis in 1928, Cincinnati in 1939 and 1940 — and in that era finishing first was the pennant.

He was called Deacon and did not swear, which in that trade was worth remarking on. He appeared on six Hall of Fame ballots as a player. The Veterans Committee elected him in 1962 as a manager, and he lived three more years.
