Boston was in last place on the Fourth of July in 1914 and won the pennant by ten and a half games. He went 26-10 with a 2.35 earned run average and 31 complete games in that run, and then beat Philadelphia twice in the World Series, which the Braves swept from a club that had won three of the last four.
He won 22 more in 1915 with a 2.37. Thirteen seasons gave him 121 wins against 108, a 2.66 earned run average, 2,049 innings, 172 complete games and 27 shutouts, almost all of it for Boston.
He was small and threw a spitball and a curve, and he stayed with the club as a coach into the 1920s. Two writers' ballots gave him one vote each. He died in 1949, at sixty-two.
