Born March 30, 1866
St. Louis, MO, USA
He pitched for three years before the outfield had him — 40 wins, 65 complete games — and then hit .316 across seventeen seasons with 2,544 hits, 161 triples, 1,642 runs and 583 stolen bases. He had 200 or more hits twice and 180 or more in seven seasons.
He led the National League with 21 triples in 1896 and 45 stolen bases in 1900, at thirty-four. Ten of his seasons were with the Giants, and he played beside so many later Hall of Famers that his own case is usually raised in their company.
Only Lave Cross has more hits among nineteenth-century players who have never been elected. Thirteen committees have taken up his name since 1936 and none has acted. He umpired in the Pacific Coast League afterward and died in Oakland in 1945, at seventy-nine.
