Dolf Luque

Dolf Luque Marquee

b. August 4, 1890 · Boston Braves 1914–1915, Cincinnati Reds 1918–1929, Brooklyn Robins 1930–1931, New York Giants 1932–1935

In 1923 he won 27 and lost 8 with a 1.93 earned run average and six shutouts, leading the National League in all three. Twenty seasons gave him 194 wins against 179 with a 3.24 earned run average, 3,220 innings and 206 complete games.

He was Cuban, from Havana, and reached the major leagues in 1914, three decades before Jackie Robinson and at a time when a light-skinned Cuban could be signed and a dark-skinned one could not. He was abused from the stands for twenty years and once went into the Giants' dugout after a heckler.

At forty-two he came out of the New York bullpen in the fifth game of the 1933 World Series and pitched four and a third scoreless innings to win it. He managed in Cuba for decades afterward and is in that country's hall of fame. Nine writers' ballots gave him no more than fifteen votes. He died in Havana in 1957, at sixty-six.
