Bump Hadley pitched sixteen seasons and won 161 games, and is remembered for one of them: on May 25, 1937, a pitch of his struck Mickey Cochrane in the head at Yankee Stadium, fracturing his skull in three places and ending the career of one of the best catchers in the sport's history.
Cochrane never blamed him and the two remained on good terms, but Hadley carried it. He was by then in the middle of his best years, pitching for Yankees clubs that won four consecutive World Series from 1936 to 1939.
Born in Lynn, Massachusetts in 1904, Hadley worked 2,945 innings with 135 complete games and finished 161-165. His death came in February 1963, at fifty-eight.
